Initially, it’s the riffs that pull you in huge, hooky riffs that envelope you, muscular and masterful, pummelling and intense. With each successive revolution, its impact grows stronger, its power redoubled. What MASTODON tinkered with on 'The Hunter' and now even further on 'Once More 'Round the Sun' is a natural evolution for a band that can only have so much more to say as a sludge prog. This album features their singles High Road, Chimes at Midnight, The Motherload, and Asleep in the Deep. It was recorded at Rock Falcon Studios in Franklin, Tennessee with Nick Raskulinecz as the producer. essentially doesn’t have a message any more complex than ‘We’re all another year older.’ It’s the closest Mastodon have come to releasing a plug ’n’ play garage rock album. On first listen, Once More ’Round The Sun is, quite simply, another Mastodon master-piece. Mastodon’s sixth studio album Once More ‘Round the Sun was released June 24 th, 2014 from Reprise Records. But the new album, which was recorded in Rock Falcon Studios in Nashville under the forensic eye of Nick Raskulinecz (Deftones, Rush, Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains) is so straightforward it makes The Hunter look like an Opeth triple-vinyl concept album about Game Of Thrones. The title, for example, referred to guitarist Brent Hinds’ brother Brad, who passed away while out hunting. The sludge/prog/WTF four-piece from Atlanta, Georgia, rode to fame not just on the back of incendiary chops, startling originality and colossal riffs but also on their ability to enthrall fans with multi-layered, modern parables told via artwork, lyrics and interviews – and so they remained for their first four albums.Īnd even though their last LP, 2011’s The Hunter, was supposed to be just a regular, no book-learnin’ kinda deal, it still had plenty of subtext and narrative. High Road and the title track work as well as standalone rock radio singles as they do in the context of the album, which hasn’t always been the case with this band. Y’see, Mastodon are the masters of narrative and it’s important to not underestimate how key this skill has been for them. Mastodon laid the groundwork for shorter and more instantaneous songs on 2011’s The Hunter, and Once More ’Round The Sun picked up where that album left off.
