![]() I believe that GFR is the Best AmericanHard Rock band based on their album releases and their concert performances. But they never recevied top billing over Led Zeppelin. Popularity-wise, GFR played some big festivals back in the day, and sold our Shea Stadium in record time as well. Grand Funk Railroad toured constantly to packed arenas worldwide. I doubt that GFR was EVER better on their Best nights, as compared to Led Zeppelin on any of their BEST nights. Grand Funk Railroad (also known as Grand Funk) is an American rock band that was highly popular during the 1970s. ![]() I was fortunate to have seen Led Zeppelin 8 times over their career, and I can tell you, that as good as GFR was. A shame, since I will never listen to the entire drum solo on TNUC anyway. It was recorded live 20 April 1997 at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The concert was a benefit performance for the nation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. the cool crowd stuff and the neat intro stuff that was found on the LP release, are either not there at all or greatly shortened. Original lineup of Grand Funk Railroad (left to right: Don Brewer, Mark Farner, and Mel Schacher): Bosnia is a live recording by the American rock band Grand Funk Railroad. so while the songs are given their full measure. *******NOTE******* The Re-Mastered version of CAUGHT IN THE ACT has been squeezed onto -one- CD. I much prefer the live versions of their best songs, hits and all. I don't care for their "Greatest Hits" releases. Their Best compilation released was the 2-album MARK, DON & MEL 1969-71. Dick Clark and ABC need to release ! ! ! ! I also vividly remember GFR's performance on ABC's In Concert program. Mark, with his long hair, riffing away on Footstompin' Music - incredible ! The first time I saw them was in 1971 or 1972. Album DescriptionI have been fan of GFR since the early 70's. So, Bosnia captures the bulk of Grand Funk's set, featuring 20 songs over two CDs. It's a lineup that flirts with kitsch, and since nobody involved with the project realizes that, it's even weirder and campier than it would be if the whole thing was intentional. Since this was a special event - not only were they reuniting, but they were doing it for a cause - the trio decided to augment their lineup with a four-piece horn section led by the Silver Bullet Band's Alto Reed and, on occasion, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, which was under the direction of notorious Letterman lounge lizard Paul Shaffer. Evidently, the Bosnian ambassador went to high school in Cleveland, where he became a huge Grand Funk fan, and years later, that somehow led to the band giving a Bosnian relief benefit concert in Detroit in the spring of 1997. Many people have thought many things about Grand Funk Railroad, but chances are, no one ever thought they were politically conscious, despite songs like "People Let's Stop the War," "Save the Land," and "Freedom Is for Children." That's only one of the reasons why the double-disc Bosnia seems so odd: it's hard to believe that the band had even heard of Bosnia, much less care about what was happening there.
